The City of Dunkirk Fire Department prides itself on the importance of a strong fire prevention program, educating members of the community young and old. The City of Dunkirk Fire Department Division of Fire Prevention is led by Lt. Gary Katta and Lt. Michael Edwards. All firefighters participate in yearly fire prevention activities year round. During fire prevention month in October, crews visit all city schools and educate children on fire prevention, with many age based programs.
The City of Dunkirk Fire Department is fortunate to have a fire prevention trailer, constructed similar to a small two story residence to provide hands on education to children in grades 2-4. Firefighters also have a fully animated fire prevention dog named Patches purchased from Robotronics to educate children.
In 2008, the Dunkirk Fire Department initiated an important program named "Fire Prevention and Escape," to educate adults, and parents of the importance of fire prevention for all ages. Under the direction of Captain Allen Loeb, this 30-40 minute informative program can be demonstrated to groups of adults large and small.
